Korea Travel in October 2026 – Weather, What to Wear & Things to Do
Hi friends, it's Hee from Seoul 🍂
The heat is finally gone here, and the mornings smell like fall.
Quick answer first:
October is one of the best months to visit Korea. Expect clear skies, daytime highs around 20°C (68°F), cool nights, and fall colors starting in the mountains. Pack layers, not a heavy coat.
Below I'll walk you through the weather, what I actually wear this time of year, and what's going on around the country in October 2026.
■ 1. October Weather in Korea
October is dry, sunny and comfortable. Honestly, it's the month most Koreans would pick if you asked, "When should my friend visit?"
Here's what Seoul usually feels like:
- Daytime high: around 20°C (68°F)
- Night low: around 11°C (52°F)
- Rain: only about 6 days in the whole month
Early October still feels a bit like late summer. By the last week, the air gets crisp and you'll start seeing people in light coats.
💡 Local tip
The temperature gap between noon and night can be about 10°C. A sunny afternoon in a T-shirt can turn into a chilly evening by the Han River, so always carry one extra layer.
■ 2. What to Wear in October
The key word is layers. You don't need a winter coat yet.
Early October (1st–15th)
- T-shirt or thin long-sleeve top
- Light cardigan or shirt jacket for the evening
- Jeans or light pants
Late October (16th–31st)
- Long-sleeve top or thin knit
- Light jacket, trench coat or windbreaker
- A scarf if you get cold easily
For the whole month
- Comfortable sneakers (you'll walk a LOT, and palace grounds are gravel)
- A small foldable umbrella, just in case
- Sunscreen and sunglasses, the sun is still strong at midday
💡 Local tip
If you plan to hike for fall foliage, bring a windproof jacket. Mountain tops are much colder than the city, especially in the morning.
■ 3. Things to Do in October 2026
This October is packed with festivals. Here are the ones I'd actually recommend to a friend.
🌉 Seoul Light Hangang Festival (Oct 2–11)
A laser and light art show on Nodeul Island, right in the middle of the Han River. It runs in the evening, from 6:30 to 10:30 PM. Great for a night walk.
🏮 Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival (Oct 3–18)
If you only take one trip outside Seoul, make it this one. Thousands of lanterns float on the Namgang River in Jinju. The lanterns are lit every day from 6 PM to midnight, and entry is free (some activities cost extra). Fireworks over the river are scheduled for Oct 3, 9 and 17 at 8 PM.
👑 Royal Culture Festival (around Oct 7–11)
Special programs and performances at Seoul's royal palaces. Perfect if you love Korean history or K-dramas.
🌾 Seoul Eulalia (Silver Grass) Festival (Oct 17–23)
Haneul Park turns into a sea of silver grass. Go around sunset, it's beautiful and very "Korean fall."
🍁 Fall Foliage (mid to late October)
The leaves start at the top of the mountains and come down slowly. Seoraksan is usually first, around mid to late October, and Seoul's city parks follow in late October to early November.
💡 Local tip
The Seoul World Fireworks Festival, which many people know as an October event, was held in September this year. So don't plan your trip around it!
■ 4. October 2026 Holidays (Plan Ahead!)
October has two long weekends this year:
- Oct 3 (Sat) – National Foundation Day
- Oct 5 (Mon) – substitute holiday
- Oct 9 (Fri) – Hangeul Day
That means Oct 3–5 and Oct 9–11 are three-day weekends for most Koreans. Trains, popular festivals and hiking trails get very crowded on those days.
💡 Local tip
If you're taking the KTX to Busan, Jinju or Gangneung on those weekends, book your train tickets as early as you can.
■ 5. Local Tips Before You Go
- Get a T-money card on day one. It works for subways, buses, taxis and even convenience stores.
- Hike or visit palaces on weekdays if you can. Weekends in fall are busy.
- Visit popular spots early in the morning for better photos and fewer crowds.
- Festival schedules can change, so check the official website the day before.
■ Quick Summary
- Weather: sunny and dry, about 11–20°C (52–68°F)
- Wear: layers, light jacket, comfy sneakers
- Must-see: Jinju Lantern Festival, Seoul Light Hangang, silver grass and fall foliage
- Watch out: holiday crowds on Oct 3–5 and Oct 9–11
October in Korea really is something special. I hope you get to see it for yourself!
