Seoul 3 Day Itinerary – Perfect Plan for First-Timers
Hi friends, it's Hee from Seoul 🍂
Friends from abroad always ask me the same thing: "I only have three days in Seoul. What should I do?" So here's the exact plan I give them.
Quick answer first:
Spend Day 1 on old Seoul (palaces, hanok village, traditional market), Day 2 on city views and shopping (Myeongdong, Namsan, N Seoul Tower), and Day 3 on trendy Seoul (Seongsu, Hongdae and the Han River). Each day stays in one area, so you spend your time exploring, not commuting.
Let's go day by day.
■ Day 1: Palaces, Hanok & Markets (Old Seoul)
This is the day you'll remember most. Everything is close together, so wear comfy shoes and walk.
🏯 9:30 AM – Gyeongbokgung Palace
Start at Seoul's biggest royal palace. Try to arrive before 10 AM to catch the Royal Guard Changing Ceremony at the main gate (there's another one at 2 PM). Give yourself about 2 hours inside.
- Closed on Tuesdays, so plan around it
- Wearing hanbok? Entry is free. Rental shops are all around the palace.
🏘️ 12:00 PM – Bukchon Hanok Village
Walk 15 minutes east to see traditional Korean houses on hilly little streets. Real people live here, so please keep your voice down.
- Important: the main area is only open to tourists from 10 AM to 5 PM. Visiting outside those hours can get you a fine.
- Grab lunch nearby. Samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) is a classic in this area.
🍵 2:30 PM – Insadong & Ikseon-dong
Insadong is full of traditional tea houses, crafts and souvenir shops. Then walk over to Ikseon-dong, a tiny maze of hanok alleys turned into cafes and restaurants. It's very photogenic.
🥢 6:00 PM – Gwangjang Market
Finish at one of Seoul's oldest markets. Sit at a food stall and order bindaetteok (crispy mung bean pancake) and mayak gimbap (mini rice rolls). Cheap, loud and delicious.
💡 Local tip
After dinner, walk along Cheonggyecheon Stream back toward Gwanghwamun. It's lit up at night and a lovely way to end the day. If you're here Oct 8–11, 2026, there's also a free light show on Gwanghwamun Gate for Hangul Day (8–11 PM).
■ Day 2: City Views & Shopping (Central Seoul)
Today is about the modern side of Seoul and the best view in the city.
🛍️ 10:30 AM – Myeongdong
Seoul's famous shopping street, especially for K-beauty. Most cosmetic shops hand out samples, so it's fun to browse even if you don't buy much. For lunch, kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) is a local favorite here.
🚡 1:00 PM – Namsan (Walk or Cable Car)
Head up Namsan Mountain from Myeongdong. You can take the cable car, but if the weather is nice, I really recommend walking the trail. In fall, the trees along the path turn red and yellow.
🗼 5:00 PM – N Seoul Tower
Time your visit for sunset. Watching the whole city light up from the top is honestly magical. Even without going up the tower, the view from the outdoor deck is great.
🌃 8:00 PM – Myeongdong Street Food & DDP
Come back down for Myeongdong's evening street food stalls (try tteokbokki, egg bread and grilled cheese lobster). Then take a short subway ride to Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), the futuristic silver building that looks amazing at night.
💡 Local tip
Go up Namsan about an hour before sunset. You'll get daytime views, golden hour and night lights all in one visit.
■ Day 3: Cafes, Youth Culture & the Han River (Trendy Seoul)
Your last day is the most relaxed, and it's where you'll see how young Seoulites actually spend their weekends.
☕ 10:30 AM – Seongsu-dong
Old factories and warehouses turned into some of Seoul's coolest cafes, bakeries and pop-up stores. People call it the "Brooklyn of Seoul." Just wander and pop into whatever looks interesting.
🎸 2:00 PM – Yeonnam-dong & Hongdae
Take the subway to Hongik University Station. Start with a walk along Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Yeonnam-dong, a long park built on an old railway track. Then head into Hongdae for street performers, vintage shops and photo booths.
🍗 6:00 PM – Han River Park
End your trip like a local. Go to a Han River park (Yeouido is easy to reach), order fried chicken and beer delivered right to the park, or try the instant ramyeon machines at the convenience stores. Then sit on the grass and watch the sunset.
🌉 8:00 PM – Night by the River
The bridges light up after dark. It's the perfect, peaceful last night in Seoul.
💡 Local tip
Visiting in October 2026? The Seoul Light Hangang Festival runs on Nodeul Island until Oct 11, with laser and light art shows in the evening.
■ Before You Go: Tips That Save Time
🏨 Where to stay
For first-timers, stay in Myeongdong or Jongno (near Gwanghwamun). Both are central, so every day on this plan is a short subway ride away.
💳 How to get around
Buy a T-money card on day one. It works on the subway, buses and even convenience stores.
🗺️ Which map app to use
Google Maps doesn't work well for directions in Korea. Download Naver Map or KakaoMap instead. Both have English.
📅 Closing days
- Gyeongbokgung: closed Tuesdays
- Changdeokgung: closed Mondays
Swap days around if your trip falls on these.
🍂 Best season
Fall (October to early November) is my favorite time for this plan. Cool weather, blue skies, and autumn leaves on Namsan.
■ Quick Summary
- Day 1: Gyeongbokgung → Bukchon → Insadong & Ikseon-dong → Gwangjang Market
- Day 2: Myeongdong → Namsan → N Seoul Tower (sunset) → Street food & DDP
- Day 3: Seongsu → Yeonnam-dong & Hongdae → Han River at sunset
- Stay: Myeongdong or Jongno
- Must-haves: T-money card + Naver Map or KakaoMap
Three days won't show you all of Seoul, but this plan gives you a little of everything: history, food, city views and everyday local life. I hope it makes your first trip easy and unforgettable!
